Recession Is Having a Devastating Impact on Our Yo

The recession is already damaging the hopes of thousands of young people who are struggling to find a job. Windows Anytime Upgrade

Now young people in schools could be next in line.

Today Windows 7 serial key, we are releasing new research showing that seven out of 10 secondary school teachers (70%) are increasingly worried their pupils will end up on benefits, while more than one in three (37%) feel their efforts are in vain, due to high levels of unemployment.

As a former teacher myself, I know that they do all they can to support students. It is now more important than ever for government, charities and employers to work closely with teachers to support young people who may be struggling.

Young people can fall out of the education system for many reasons – and all too often they end up feeling that they can never achieve anything.

There are thousands of young people that fall into this vicious cycle, feeling like they have ‘failed’ in school and leaving with few qualifications and little confidence to help them find a job in the future. This can breed low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness and sometimes even depression.

We cannot allow young people who are still at school, as well as the million young people who are struggling to find job, become victims of this recession. With the right support, it is possible for pupils to achieve their ambitions, rather than becoming a ‘lost generation’.

Youth charity The Prince’s Trust runs the xl and Fairbridge programmes with teachers to help young people who are struggling at school, preventing exclusions, improving grades and giving them the skills they need to find a job in the future. We work with schools across the UK to give young people intense, structured support – helping prevent truancy and helping them gain qualifications and employability skills.

I met one young person recently who had experienced a family break up and tragically had to come to terms with the death of a parent. As a result he began to truant from school Windows 7 activation key, developing problems which took control of his life.

His teachers recommended that he join The Trust’s xl club and the change in him was remarkable. Over the following two years he built up his skills and confidence and his attendance reached almost 100%. He passed his GCSEs and is now studying IT at college – something he never thought he would be able to achieve before.

It is young people like this that we need to support to ensure that they are well equipped to move from the education system and into a positive future.

Without the right support, we risk seeing a generation of lost young adults joining an ever-growing dole queue.

Varney Agency provides vital identity-fraud servic

Brian Swartz | BDNJeannie Stanhope is the personal lines manager and the human resources manager for the Varney Agency. Buy Photo

Are you who you really think you are?

The question seems silly, but for people who insure their homes and automobiles with the Bangor-based Varney Agency replica watches, the answer saves them money and time.

The question involves identity fraud, a crime that affected 8.1 million adult Americans in 2010 and cost the average victim $631 in out-of-pocket expenses per incident*. And while you think you know who you really are, a smart identity thief can convince retailers, banks, and even the U.S. Postal Service that you are somebody else.

After obtaining critical information about an individual, an identity thief poses as that person to “steal” cash and services. The victim may not realize a crime has occurred until a strange invoice arrives in the mail or unexplained charges appear on a credit card statement.

For years people believed that ID thieves lurked in the shadows around mailboxes and trashcans to steal mail that might contain personal information. Today, though, ID thieves also “work” the Internet, where potential victims often place personal information on social networking sites.

Not even email is safe. A few months ago, a freelance writer sent me an email that requested I look at a particular site. Trusting her judgment, I clicked on the link — and muttered “oh, my” when it opened.

Knowing this writer would never, ever find such a prurient video to be entertaining, I contacted her immediately. Other email “contacts” had already notified her, fortunately, and she quickly changed her compromised email address.

A month later, another friend saw his email address hijacked, too. For several days, he was not who he was supposed to be, at least on the Web.

“Identity theft can affect anyone at any time,” said Jeannie Stanhope, personal lines manager at the Varney Agency. “It’s a major problem, here in Maine and across the country.”

In 2005, “we started protecting our customers who insure their primary homes and autos with us,” she said. All such customers receive enhanced identity-theft protection through IDentityTheft 911. This service is designed to protect policyholders and their household members from fraud that can occur at various times in their lives, from birth through death.

“We’re the only agency in the State of Maine that offers this service free of charge to our customers,” Stanhope said. “Tim Varney has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to protecting our customers. He made the investment to offer identity-theft protection.”

A customer who suspects identity fraud should contact the Varney Agency “immediately,” Stanhope said. “One reason you have an agent is so we can give you that personal assistance,” she explained. “The moment you believe your credit or identity has been compromised, you want to speak to someone you trust. You do not need to be a victim of full-blown identity theft to use the service. You can call your agent at the Varney Agency.”

A customer can also call or visit the nearest Varney Agency branch, she indicated. The agency has 22 branches in Maine and one in New Hampshire.

After identity fraud has been reported, a Varney agent will transfer the customer “over to IDentityTheft 911 while you’re on the phone with us or sitting here [in the branch] talking with your agent,” Stanhope said.

Then IDentityTheft 911 assigns a fraud specialist to work with the Varney Agency customer. The fraud specialist “steps in immediately to stop fraudulent activity involving that person,” Stanhope said.

According to Stanhope, an IDentityTheft 911 fraud specialist works with the Varney Agency customer to resolve all issues related to ID theft. Services range from contacting creditors and law-enforcement agencies to guiding a Varney Agency customer through the intricate steps involved in replacing stolen documents, such as a driver’s license, insurance cards, a passport, a birth certificate, or an ATM or debit card.

“Sometimes you misplace your wallet, or it gets stolen,” Stanhope said. “IDentityTheft 911 will help you file a police report, report the lost charge cards to your credit card company, [and] help you obtain replacement documents.”

According to Stanhope, an IDentityTheft 911 fraud specialist also educates a Varney Agency customer about the necessary steps being taken to resolve ID fraud and offers tips and practical advice on how the customer can avoid additional fraud-related problems.

With the IDT 911 “fraud specialist working for and with you, you don’t need to worry about what you need to do to get your identity back,” she said.

“It can take a great deal of time and effort to convince a creditor or a government agency about your true identity replica watches,” Stanhope said. For example, if an ID thief opens a charge account in a victim’s name replica watches, the financial institution that issues the card “really has no way of knowing if the person who actually opened the account is the victim or not,” she said.

“You say you didn’t open the account,” but it has the victim’s name, address, and perhaps other pertinent information, Stanhope explained. Proving that an ID thief opened the account “can be difficult and time-consuming, she said.

“That’s where IDentityTheft 911 is really important,” Stanhope said. “IDentityTheft 911 works closely with you and everyone else touched by the identity theft to resolve all issues.”

A Varney Agency customer can still incur expenses, such as the costs related to replacing a driver’s license or a passport or the funds lost if an identity thief used a stolen debit card to empty a checking account. However, the IDentityTheft 911 fraud specialist can build evidence that could be used in court proceedings against an identity thief, Stanhope said.

And once the Varney Agency has placed a customer in contact with IDentityTheft 911, “there is no cost to you,” she stressed. “Every service that IDentityTheft 911 provides will be free of charge.

“We value our customers,” Stanhope said. “That’s why we offer this service to them.”

Banks closing ranks as Occupy protesters plan a Ma

The world’s biggest banks are working with one another and police to gather intelligence as protesters try to rejuvenate the Occupy Wall Street movement with May demonstrations, industry security consultants said.

Among 99 protest targets in midtown Manhattan on May 1 are JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America offices, said Marisa Holmes, a member of Occupy’s May Day planning committee. Events are scheduled for more than 115 cities Machines Tattoo, including an effort to shut down the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, where Wells Fargo & Co. investors relied on police to get past protests at their annual meeting this week.

“Our goal is to kick off the spring offensive and go directly to where the financial elite play and plan,” she said.

After evictions and arrests from Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park to London that began last year, the movement against income inequality and corporate abuse will regain strength, said Brian McNary, director of global risk at Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations, a subsidiary of Sweden’s Securitas AB. He works with international financial firms to “identify, map and track” protesters across social media and at their assemblies Tattoo Machine Rotary, he said. The companies gather data “carefully and methodically” to prevent business disruptions.

Banks are preparing for Occupy demonstrations at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Chicago summit on May 20 and 21 by sharing information from video surveillance, robots and officers in buildings, giving “a real-time, 360-degree” view, said McNary, who works on the project.

Banks cooperating on surveillance are like elk fending off wolves in Yellowstone National Park, he said. While other animals try in vain to sprint away alone, elk survive attacks by forming a ring together, he said.

Planning for May 1 in New York began in January in a fourth-floor workspace at 16 Beaver St., about two blocks from Wall Street, according to Holmes. The date serves as an international labor day, commemorating a deadly 1886 clash between police and workers in Chicago’s Haymarket Square.

The midtown demonstrations will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a march from Bryant Park to Union Square and a 4 p.m. rally there, according to an online schedule. Protesters, including labor unions and community groups, have a permit to march from Union Square to lower Manhattan, according to police. Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s headquarters is among financial- district picketing options, Holmes said.

Banks are bracing. Deutsche Bank is closing the public atrium of its U.S. headquarters at 60 Wall St., which protesters have used for meetings, Holmes said. Duncan King, a bank spokesman, declined to comment.

New York police can handle pickets, said Paul Browne, a spokesman. “We’re experienced at accommodating lawful protests and responding appropriately to anyone who engages in unlawful activity,” he said. “We’re prepared to do both next month.”

Banks have a history of coordinating security with city authorities. At a 2009 U.S. Senate hearing, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly described a partnership with financial-district firms that gives his department “access to hundreds of private- security cameras.” Footage is monitored in a downtown Manhattan center, he said. A 2005 letter Kelly wrote to Edward Forst, then chief administrative officer at Goldman Sachs, shows it was among firms getting space in the facility.

Starting in 2010, JPMorgan gave the New York City Police Foundation the largest donation in the group’s history, the bank’s website shows. The gift Tattoo Gun Needles, valued at $4.6 million, included 1,000 patrol car laptops. “These officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe,” Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon, 56, said in a statement on the website.

New York companies have provided services and equipment for decades and are proud to show their support, Browne said. The foundation is the department’s fundraising arm. Goldman Sachs, News Corp. and Barclays Plc were among 16 donors who gave at least $100,000 through the year ended June 30, 2010, according to the foundation’s website. Dozens of others gave less.

Last year’s anti-bank protests were “like a big forest fire that was suppressed and put out,” Chris Swecker, the former head of security at Bank of America, said in an interview. Firms are studying protesters because “there’s also the opportunity for spontaneous fires to spring back up again,” said Swecker, who runs a security-consulting firm in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Private-security teams in London have become an “incredible army” and “the eyes and ears of the city” thanks to a coordination program called Project Griffin, according to Rachel Briggs, policy director at the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue. The organization develops responses to security challenges.

The heads of security of most of the major banks there have formed a group called “sister banks,” said Ian Mansfield, a London police counterterrorism security adviser. They do more than gather and share information with one another and the police, he said by e-mail. “Sometimes we will ask for a high- visibility deployment around premises basically as a ‘show of strength,’” he wrote.

Spokesmen for Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, UBS and Credit Suisse wouldn’t describe security measures for the protests. One likened commenting to telling al-Qaida about the bank’s continuity plans.

“When you portray a position of weakness, it invites attack,” said McNary, the Pinkerton director. “They don’t want to provide the perception that they’re hunkering down behind their bulwarks and putting up big walls.”

Adam Yauch, You Were the Cheese, We Were the Macar

All weekend I’ve been thinking about the late great MCA, Adam Yauch, member of The Beastie Boys. I traveled through Brooklyn and thought of him, a Brooklyn boy raised in the still unhipped neighborhood of Midwood. I thought about my little brother Blake at 8 years-old blasting “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (to Party).” I thought about my ex-boyfriend who blasted Check Your Head every morning on his drive to the nearby community college. I thought of my friend Judy driving in her Fiatt in 1989, in her 12th pair of converse hightops, blasting Paul’s Boutique. She was blasting my mind, because I associated the Beastie Boys with well, boys. That’s how flat my world still was then: there was “boy” music and “girl” music. Yet here was Judy whacking the steering wheel singing along with gusto and I thought: here’s another reason Judy is a thousand times cooler than me, deeper than me, more worldly than me. She gets something about life that I don’t yet–she gets Paul’s Boutique. For awhile it was unique to like that album. My brothers who loved License to Ill didn’t like that album, my boyfriend didn’t like that album — somehow you weren’t supposed to like it — but now it’s one of those records that people say they like, like they’ve always been that cool. It wasn’t like that right away — it was one of those slow burners that snuck up on everyone. It required something of its listener. It required that you let go of something in order to accept what it was: new, experimental, and alive. It was unique to like that album and Judy liked it.

The Beastie Boys could have easily been a gimmicky band and been lost in the plastic bin of MTV 1980s relics, but there was more to them than that. They could actually play music, and they had the vision to take the feelings of certain pieces of music and let that speak in their work. That is what sampling is: we couldn’t say it better ourselves, so we won’t. They also had the rare quality of growing up, without growing old. It’s an unlikely trajectory in the world of commercial rock — a place that usually thrives on the antics the Beastie Boys came in with, (partying, large penises on stage Replica Christian Audigier Clothes, sexism) but gets squeamish when you ask for forgiveness with integrity. Incredibly, they were able to do that and keep growing as artists.

When I heard that Adam Yauch had died, it was like learning that one of the guys I went to high school had died. I honestly had not listened to a Beastie Boys album in a few years, but they were one of those bands that inhabited my life. I only bought one album of theirs Cheap Chloe Dresses, but they were in so many cars that I rode shotgun in and in so many backyards that housed parties, and in so many warm summer nights talking in living rooms, dorm rooms, and bedrooms. They were inside some of the boys I loved most, some of the boys I grew up with, some of the boys that are no longer boys at all. They are men now, still a bit younger than the men that make up the Beastie Boys, but they’ve grown up.

When someone dies in your world, it’s an uncomfortable rearranging. The tapestry of your life has shifted and you need to figure out how it fits. I did not know Adam Yauch personally, nor can I claim to be his biggest fan, but I feel a tear in the fabric of the life I’ve known so far. It’s too early to lose him. It’s not just that he was too young to die yet, it’s that the world we inhabited together is too young to loose him. I am not ready for a Beastie Boy to die. That’s not what’s supposed to happen — and yet, here we are.

I went through the Lower East Side this weekend thinking all this. Then I saw that the location of “Paul’s Boutique” is now a yuppie wrap place. You don’t have to live in New York for 20 years to feel the symbolism of that. Things go away, times change, eras end. No matter what you think or feel, that is what’s supposed to happen. Luckily, through it all music goes on playing.

MCA, in the words one of my favorite Beastie Boy rhymes: like Jonie loves Chachi, you’re the cheese, we’re the macaroni. Thank you for your great effort.

Health experts chew fat over obesity epidemic

Health experts are meeting in Darwin today to discuss setting up a national registry to track the performance of hospitals and surgeons offering procedures to treat obesity. Tattoo Supplies

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 25 per cent of Australian adults are obese.

Associate Professor Wendy Brown Tattoo Supplies, from the Monash University School of Public Health, says there has been a 300 per cent increase in the number of people resorting to obesity surgery since 2005.

She says a register will ensure the immediate safety of procedures such as gastric bypass and stapling surgery.

“If you take the example of that French breast implant that has recently been found to be faulty, if there had been a register of those, we would have known who had the procedure, we would have known when the procedures were done, and we may have had an early warning,” she said.

“We want to be able to offer that to the people who chose to undergo obesity surgery.

“What we hope from these procedures are that they are safe and that they are effective, effective not just in weight loss but also in terms of resolving the health problems that often go hand in hand with obesity.”

How To Conduct a Strip-Search

The Supreme Court has ruled that law enforcement may strip-search a suspect in custody for any crime Replica Marc Jacobs Dresses

Photograph by Stephan Gladieu/Getty Images.

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that officials can strip-search suspects for any arrest Buy Christian Audigier Clothing, however minor the offense, before admitting them to jail—even if there’s no reasonable suspicion that the individual has contraband. What’s the proper way to conduct a strip-search?

Start at the top and work your way down. Policies regarding the proper time and place for a strip-search vary from state to state and facility to facility, but they all prescribe the same basic procedure. The security officer takes the person to be strip-searched to a private place, asks him to remove his clothes, and then inspects each garment, one at a time, running fingers over any seams to make sure nothing has been sewn inside. Once the subject is naked, the search proceeds from top to bottom and front to back, with the officer giving instructions on what to do. First, he orders the subject to run his hands vigorously through his own hair, to show there’s nothing hidden on his scalp. Then he tells the subject to pull his ears forward and turn his head, to show there’s nothing tucked behind them. Next Cheap Chanel Dresses, he instructs the subject to tilt back his head to reveal the nostrils, and roll his tongue around in his mouth. He might also ask the subject to pull his lips away from his gums, and lift his arms to show there’s nothing in his armpits.

Then on to the torso and lower body. Female strip-search subjects are asked to lift up their breasts and open their legs. Men lift up their penises and scrotums, and, if they’re uncircumcised* Discount White Herve leger, they pull back their foreskins. At this point the guard tells the subject to turn around Herve Leger sale, so they can start again at the top. Now the subject has to ruffle the back of his hair, and bend over with legs spread. The guard might say, “squat and cough,” with the aim of dislodging an object stored in the rectum or vagina. The strip-search ends with the subject’s being asked to show the bottoms of his feet.

It sounds like a lot, but with a normal, cooperative subject the procedure shouldn’t take more than about five minutes. A suspect with dreadlocks can be more difficult to search Herve Leger sale, since the hair-ruffling technique isn’t quite as straightforward. Those who are wheelchair-bound also pose special problems. Those who absolutely refuse to follow instructions, and whom the officer suspects of concealing contraband, may be tied down to a gurney.

To be clear, a strip-search is different from the more invasive “body cavity search,” which has an officer inserting his hand into the subject and is generally performed only as a last resort. If an individual is suspected of concealing contraband in his or her rectum, and a standard strip-search turns up nothing, there are a few different ways the officers may proceed. One option is to keep a suspect in isolation to see if he or she eventually excretes some unauthorized material. Another makes use of something called a “Body Orifice Security Scanner,” which works something like a metal detector for your nether parts.

Different kinds of security personnel learn how to conduct strip-searches in different ways. Federal corrections officers study and memorize the procedure at the Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga. After learning the basics as part of their three-week classroom training, they practice on mannequins or on other trainees (who remain fully clothed).
